Australia’s Subclass 858 National Innovation visa (NIV) offers permanent residency to people who have achieved exceptional and internationally recognised success in their field. It is designed for talented individuals who can contribute to Australia’s growth, innovation, and global reputation. This visa targets researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, athletes, and creatives who are ready to make a real impact.
Who Can Apply
You can apply for this visa if you have a strong record of outstanding achievement and are still active in your field. You must demonstrate that you can establish yourself professionally in Australia and provide benefits to the nation, whether through job creation, innovation, cultural contributions, or raising Australia’s standing internationally.
There is no strict age limit. However, applicants under 18 or over 55 must show they will provide exceptional and measurable benefit to Australia. You also need to meet health and character requirements, demonstrate at least functional English, and ensure any debts, including those of any family members, to the Australian government are cleared.
Important Notes When Applying
Without an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs, you cannot apply for the NIV. You must also be nominated on a Form 1000 at a time of application, signed by a nominator recognised nationally in your field. This nominator can be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen, or an Australian organisation.
What the Visa Lets You Do
Once granted, the NIV allows you to:
- Live in Australia permanently
- Work and study freely
- Access public health care through Medicare
- Attend government-provided English classes if eligible
- Sponsor family members to join you
- Travel in and out of Australia for five years
After five years, you will need a Resident Return Visa (subclass 155 or 157) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident. If eligible, you can also apply for Australian citizenship.
Bringing Family
You can include members of your family unit when you apply, and you can add family members up until the department makes a decision. All family members must meet health and character requirements, regardless of whether they accompany you to Australia.
Responsibilities and Expectations
The NIV is more than a residency visa; it is an opportunity to contribute to Australia in your area of expertise. You and your family must obey Australian laws, and the Department expects you to use your skills to benefit the community, economy, or culture.
This visa provides a permanent pathway for exceptional talent from around the world. It allows you to make Australia your home while contributing meaningfully to the nation’s future prosperity.
