Two unlawful non-citizens have been detected working in Melbourne’s karaoke industry during a multi-agency compliance blitz targeting migrant worker exploitation.
The coordinated operation involved the Australian Border Force, Victoria Police and Liquor Control Victoria, who inspected multiple venues across the city. Officers identified a range of breaches and warned operators about the severe penalties for employing or referring unlawful workers.
Beyond enforcement, the raids were also used to educate workers about the risks of exploitation and human trafficking in the karaoke sector, which often recruits women from Taiwan, China, South Korea and Japan. Authorities noted that some venues also host sexual services, raising concerns about worker vulnerability.
Employers found in breach of immigration or labour laws face heavy consequences, including fines, civil prosecution, and public listing as prohibited employers.
The Department of Home Affairs has urged anyone with information about immigration offences or suspicious activity to report it through its anonymous online portal.
