If you are applying for an Australian visa, you may need to prove your English language proficiency. This requirement is set by the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) and applies to certain visa subclasses.
The aim is twofold:
- To support integration, ensuring visa holders can study, work, and live effectively in Australia.
- To manage immigration risk, confirming that applicants have the communication skills needed to meet visa conditions.
Why Does the Department Require an English Test?
The DOHA requires proof of English ability for some visas because it ensures applicants can participate meaningfully in the community and workforce. This is important for accessing employment, education, and essential services.
It also improves safety and compliance, as visa holders are more likely to understand laws, workplace rules, and important communications. Finally, it aligns with Australia’s migration goals by helping to attract skilled individuals who can contribute immediately to the economy.
Which English Language Tests are Accepted after 7 August 2025?
If your test is taken on or after 7 August 2025, it must come from the following approved list and be taken in person at a secure test centre:
- Cambridge C1 Advanced Test (C1 Advanced) – This advanced-level test assesses reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, suitable for academic and professional contexts.
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General) – This test evaluates everyday English communication skills, focusing on workplace and community contexts.
- IELTS Academic – This test measures English proficiency for higher education or professional registration, with an option to retake just one skill (One Skill Retake).
- IELTS General Training – This version focuses on everyday English for work and migration purposes and also offers the One Skill Retake option.
- LANGUAGECERT Academic Test – This test assesses English skills for academic study and professional environments.
- Michigan English Test (MET) – This test is designed for a range of purposes, including academic and professional applications, and offers a Single Section Retake option.
- Occupational English Test (OET) – This specialised test measures English language skills for healthcare professionals in real-world medical scenarios.
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) – This computer-based test evaluates academic English through integrated reading, listening, speaking, and writing tasks.
- TOEFL iBT – This internet-based test assesses all four language skills for academic and professional purposes.
Which Tests are Accepted if Taken Before 7 August 2025?
If you completed your English test on or before 6 August 2025, you may still be able to use it for your visa application until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa subclass. The following tests are accepted:
- Cambridge English (CAE) / C1 Advanced
- IELTS Academic or General Training
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
- Occupational English Test (OET)
- TOEFL iBT
Are Online or At-home Tests Accepted?
The department does not accept any English language tests completed entirely online or remotely (also known as remote-proctored tests). This is because these formats do not meet the department’s secure testing requirements.
Examples of non-accepted formats include:
- CELPIP Online – The remote-proctored version of CELPIP is not valid for visa purposes.
- IELTS Online – The at-home version of IELTS cannot be used for Australian migration.
- LANGUAGECERT Academic Online – The online version of this test is not approved.
- MET Digital (at-home) – Any MET test taken outside of a secure centre is invalid.
- OET@Home – The online OET is not acceptable, even for health professionals.
- TOEFL iBT Home Edition – The remote version of TOEFL iBT is not recognised for visa purposes.
How Long are English Test Results Valid for Visas?
In most cases, English test results are valid for up to three (3) years from the date of the test. This means that if you take a test on 1 September 2025, it may be valid until 31 August 2028, depending on the visa subclass.
However, the validity period can differ depending on the visa. Some visas accept older results, while others require more recent proof. If your results expire during the application process, you may need to take a new test before the visa can be granted.

English Requirements in Australian Migration Law
The English language evidence rules are outlined in the Migration Regulations 1994. They are supported by specific legislative instruments:
- Migration (Evidence of Functional English Language Proficiency) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/014) – This instrument explains what counts as “functional” English, including accepted test scores and educational qualifications.
- Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/016) –This lists all approved English tests, the minimum scores required, and which passports can be used as proof of English proficiency.
