New South Wales has officially opened its 2025–2026 Skilled Migration State Nomination Program for both the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491), creating new opportunities for skilled professionals like you to live and work across the state.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
The subclass 190 visa is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who can contribute to the NSW economy. NSW operates a selection-based invitation process, meaning applicants cannot apply directly. Invitations are issued throughout the financial year to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria and whose occupations are included on the NSW Skills List, which reflects skills in high demand across the state.
To be considered, you must:
- Meet all Department of Home Affairs visa requirements for the subclass 190 visa;
- Hold a valid skills assessment in an eligible occupation within the NSW Skills List; and
- Meet one of the following residency requirements: currently working in NSW, residing in NSW for at least six months, or residing offshore for at least six months.
Once invited, you have 14 days to lodge your nomination application, with assessments typically finalised within six weeks after payment. NSW highlights that nomination remains highly competitive, encouraging candidates to explore all available migration pathways.
Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
The subclass 491 visa is a points-tested provisional visa that enables skilled workers like you to live, work, and study in designated regional areas of NSW for up to five years. NSW nomination for this visa is available under three pathways:
Pathway 1 – Currently Employed in Regional NSW
You must have been continuously employed for at least six months in their nominated (or closely related) occupation with the same regional NSW-based employer, earning at least the TSMIT/CSIT rate.
Pathway 2 – Invitation from Investment NSW
You must be skilled in an occupation listed within an ANZSCO unit group on the NSW Regional Skills List and meet residency criteria, either working or residing in NSW for a minimum of three months, or residing offshore for three months. This pathway is noted as highly competitive.
Pathway 3 – Recent Graduates from Regional NSW
You must have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification from a regional NSW institution within the past two years, in a field related to your nominated occupation, and qualify for ‘Study in regional Australia’ points.
Certain regional employers may also be eligible for TSMIT/CSIT concessions, allowing for reduced monetary thresholds under specific conditions.
The reopening of NSW’s skilled nomination program for both the 190 and 491 visas highlights the state’s continued commitment to attracting skilled workers who can help meet workforce demands across key industries.
