Australian Border Force officers have detained four high-priority unlawful non-citizens in Far North Queensland during a major operation targeting migrant exploitation, visa fraud and criminal syndicates profiting from illegal labour.
The operation, led by the Department of Home Affairs, focused on immigration non-compliance and the abuse of vulnerable migrant workers, particularly those engaged under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
Authorities allege the detainees played central roles in organised exploitation networks, including charging unlawful fees, facilitating illegal migration and coercing workers into unsafe employment and housing.
Those detained include a suspected scam migration agent and his partner accused of lodging invalid Protection visa applications for PALM workers, an individual allegedly trafficking illegal migrant workers to local businesses and another accused of using violence and coercion to force migrants into illegal work and substandard living conditions.
Officials said the operation sends a clear warning that Australia will not tolerate exploitation of its visa system or abuse of migrant workers, particularly in regional communities.
The Australian Border Force conducted the operation with support from the Queensland Police Service, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and the Office of Industrial Relations.
Authorities urged the public to report suspected exploitation or illegal work through Border Watch, noting community reports remain critical to disrupting organised abuse.
The Department of Home Affairs also reminded employers that heavy penalties apply for employing or referring illegal workers and encouraged businesses to verify work rights through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online system.
Supporting Workers to Access Lawful Migration Pathways
At SALIA Lawyers & Associates, we assist migrant workers and visa applicants to access lawful employer-sponsored visa pathways and to understand how employer sponsorship and compliance obligations affect their rights at work.
We provide advice on Skills in Demand (subclass 482), Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and Training (subclass 407) visas by assessing individual eligibility, reviewing qualifications and identifying the most suitable migration pathway based on each worker’s circumstances.
We will be hosting a FREE online webinar on employer-sponsored visa pathways on 12 March 2026, Thursday, at 7:00 PM Sydney time (AEDT). The session will explain visa options, common risks and practical steps for protecting your work rights in Australia.
