From 26 March 2026, Australian authorities have temporarily restricted entry for Iranian Visitor (Subclass 600) visa holders abroad to maintain orderly migration amid international instability.
The government enacted a six-month Arrival Control Determination under the Migration Amendment (2026 Measures No. 1) Act 2026, imposing travel limits for certain Iranian passport holders. The measure provides authorities time to evaluate emerging risks linked to global conflicts and migration patterns.
Some individuals remain eligible to enter, including family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents, children’s guardians, and travellers granted special approval through a Permitted Travel Certificate. Requests for these certificates are assessed individually via a dedicated portal.
Existing visa applications and new submissions continue to be assessed according to established criteria. Travellers who began their journey before 26 March, including brief transits under 24 hours, are generally permitted without extra approval.
Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke emphasised careful oversight, noting that the policy ensures deliberate migration decisions and prevents unintended long-term residency outcomes. He said, “The Australian Government is closely monitoring global developments and will adjust settings as required to ensure Australia’s migration system remains orderly, fair and sustainable.”
Authorities consulted with Australian Iranian community leaders before introducing the restrictions.
