An AI-powered pilot led by VETASSESS aims to speed up Recognition of Prior Learning, helping skilled workers secure formal qualifications sooner and easing workforce shortages.
VETASSESS, a division of Bendigo Kangan Institute, has launched the pilot in partnership with the Victorian Government and TAFE network. The initiative tests how artificial intelligence (AI) can modernise the assessment of existing skills and experience.
The project focuses on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), a pathway that formally recognises skills gained through work, training and life experience. RPL can shorten study time and open access to regulated occupations, but assessments are often complex and time-intensive.
Under the pilot, AI tools such as document intelligence and a dedicated RPL engine automatically analyse evidence submitted by candidates and map it against relevant units of competency. This automation reduces administrative workload and improves consistency across assessments.
VETASSESS says assessors remain central to the process. Whilst AI manages data-heavy tasks, qualified human assessors make final competency decisions to maintain quality, accuracy and integrity.
TAFE Gippsland and Chisholm Institute are co-designing and testing the system, ensuring it reflects real-world assessment practices and learner needs across Victoria.
The Victorian Government has committed $3 million to the pilot, positioning the project as a key investment in workforce development, faster upskilling and improved access to jobs in high-demand industries.
