Thousands of Australians joined ‘Invasion Day’ rallies and anti-immigration protests on January 26, highlighting tensions over Indigenous rights, immigration and national identity during Australia Day celebrations.
At Sydney’s Hyde Park, the annual ‘Invasion Day’ rally began with a tribute to victims of last week’s NSW rural shooting, drawing thousands of participants advocating for Indigenous rights. Speakers called for land repatriation, condemned deaths in police custody and urged unity against rising nationalism and populist movements.
Nearby, hundreds of anti-immigration demonstrators gathered for the March for Australia protest, waving national flags and voicing concerns over immigration levels, housing shortages and economic pressures. The demonstration has previously faced criticism for alleged links to far-right groups.
Australia Day, marking the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788, remains controversial. While many Australians celebrate the national holiday, Indigenous communities and supporters regard it as ‘Invasion Day’, symbolising the historical destruction of Aboriginal cultures.
Record-high immigration and a diverse population (half of Australians are either born overseas or have at least one migrant parent) have intensified debates over the country’s identity and policies. Aboriginal activist Gwenda Stanley called for solidarity with new Australians, emphasising the vital contributions of migrants to the nation.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged unity in a speech during a citizenship ceremony, emphasising cohesion over division amid simultaneous protests and political tensions. Similar rallies took place in major cities nationwide, reflecting the ongoing national discourse around identity, history and immigration.
