The National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) gives you the chance to secure permanent residency in Australia if you are an exceptional talent in your field. This visa is designed to attract highly accomplished people, such as researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators, creatives, and athletes, who can make a lasting contribution to Australia’s future.
But before you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI), it’s important to understand how the Department of Home Affairs decides who gets invited first. This is where the National Innovation Visa priority tiers come in. Knowing where you fit can make all the difference.
Why the Priorities Matter for You
Australia doesn’t invite everyone at the same time. Instead, the government follows a priority system to ensure that the most influential and strategically aligned applicants are considered first.
This means:
- If you fall into a higher priority tier, your EOI is more likely to be assessed quickly.
- If you are in a lower tier, you may still be invited, but you might need to wait longer.
The Four Priority Tiers Explained
There are four priority tiers, with priority one being the highest.
Priority One – Global Leaders with Prestigious Awards
If you have achieved international recognition, such as winning a Nobel Prize, an Olympic gold medal, or another globally respected award, you will be placed in the top priority group. This reflects the department’s confidence in your outstanding, world-class achievements.
If this is you, your EOI will be amongst the first considered.
Priority Two – Government-Nominated Exceptional Talent
If you have been officially endorsed by a commonwealth, state, or territory government agency through a Form 1000 nomination, you fall under Priority Two. Form 1000 is the official nomination form required for the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858), completed by an eligible Australian individual or organisation to endorse your achievements.
Priority Three – Exceptional Achievers in Tier One Sectors
If you have made outstanding contributions in one of the Tier One sectors, you will be placed in Priority Three. These sectors are critical to Australia’s long-term goals and include:
- Critical Technologies
- Health Industries
- Renewables and Low-Emission Technologies
If you are working at the cutting edge of these industries, you are strongly aligned with Australia’s future innovation strategy.
Priority Four – Leaders in Tier Two Sectors
If your achievements are in a Tier Two sector, you will still be highly regarded, but placed in Priority Four. These industries are also important for Australia’s growth:
- Agri-food and AgTech
- Defence Capabilities and Space
- Education
- Financial Services and FinTech
- Infrastructure and Transport
- Resources
If you are an expert in these areas, you can still make a strong case for your EOI—it just means others may be prioritised ahead of you.
